The eighth of August in any year is known as the Lion’s Gate because the Sun aligns with stars in the constellation Orion, forming an energetic portal. This is a good date to meditate on manifesting a particular plan or goal, and on this date in Maui a nefarious goal was set into motion.
The date is the eighth day of the eighth month, or 8/8. The 8 number conveys extreme power, and represents death, money, rebirth, and transformation. Scorpio is the eighth sign of the Zodiac and its eighth house concerns such matters, including murder and mayhem.
The chart is set for 5:12 AM on August 8, 2023 in the town of Lahaina, where the fires began. I chose this time because it is the time that the town lost power. Some reports have indicated that the fires were reported at 6:30 AM, which is an appropriate time to use for the event chart, but I believe that the power outage was really the beginning of the catastrophe, as the 5:12 chart will show.
Maui is known as the Earth’s energetic heart center, embued with loving and healing frequencies. It’s fitting that the chart ASC is in Leo, which rules the heart. The Sun and Venus are also in Leo in the first house, showing what happens immediately following the blackout: destruction by fire (Sun at 15 Leo, a destructive degree) and Venus (money, valuables, possessions) at 23 Leo, retrograde and approaching combustion. Venus rules the third house of communication, which was impaired by the power outage. No warnings of the fires went out as electricity was down, and there were no sirens. Since it was very early morning the fires were able to take hold before waking citizens even knew about them.
What stood out most in this chart were the number of planets in harmful or “killer” degrees. The 15 Leo Sun is problematic, as is the 18 degree Moon in Taurus and Mars in Virgo, 18 degrees being a degree of evil (those with planets at 18 degrees, don’t despair, this is an event chart and not a natal reading!) The Moon rules those affected by the fires, many of whom sadly have died, and many more rendered homeless and deprived of their livelihood. Here the Moon tightly trines a violent Mars also at 18 degrees in Virgo, the sign of hospitality, services, tourism, for which Maui is known.
The Moon applies to Uranus, also in an unfavorable degree of 22 Taurus – “kill or be killed.” Following the power outage Moon conjoined Uranus, which represents explosions, high-technology weaponry, and bombs.
The Moon forms a stellium in Taurus with Jupiter and Uranus. The event took place in public (tenth), on a massive scale (Jupiter), and involved high tech equipment (Uranus).
The Taurus stellium in Capricorn’s house shows an emphasis on money, possessions, land, food, status, and values. Venus, dispositor of the stellium, is in Leo, showing the love and greed for these items at a steep cost to many, as Venus squares Uranus in the kill-or-be-killed 22 degree.
Part of Fortune at the IC in 1 Scorpio shows the end game – land, power, investment, other people’s money, and death.
Several planets interconnect by a wide grand trine: Jupiter-Moon-Uranus with Mercury-Mars and Pluto in late Capricorn. This was a plan on a grand scale with much at stake.
With such strong emphasis in the chart on the elevated and angular Taurus planets, and with weakened ability for anyone to communicate and respond in good time, the chart is telling us that the fires were not an accident, or the result of climate change (really?); they were a concerted effort at a land/money grab using sophisticated technology.
Mythology will give us the morale of the story.
Here’s an interesting note on Orion, constellation in which the Lion's Gate appears. Orion was mythology’s “giant hunter” – enamored of his own strength, he bragged that he could overtake any beast on earth, until a small but mighty Scorpion stung and killed him.
The point of Orion’s story offers some hope considering the crime of the Maui fires. I believe that the giant hunters of fortune who oversaw this horrendous destruction will be exposed in due time, maybe next year when the mighty Scorpion’s co-ruler Pluto leaves Capricorn, the sign of big business, and enters Aquarius, the sign of humanity.
